63 Not Out

Source: Abhishek Mukherjee

Dear Phill,

I am still recovering from shock of the events of last couple of days and in no mood to write a big well structured letter. So, this one will be more of a short note, a note of thanks and farewell.
Being an intense follower of the game I have heard your name at least six years back when even before making your test debut you were touted as taking the responsibility of opening for Australia after retirement of Hayden and Langer, one of the most successful opening pairs in the history of the game. Then you were selected to play your first test in 2009 after Matthew Hayden’s retirement and I faintly remembered you had a great beginning of your international career. But like the entire Australian team on this post-2007 era, your form also deviate. You were dropped. But you were there somewhere all the time. Whenever I read any article about Australian cricket in Cricinfo and other sites your name kept coming up. I remember noticing that you had made a debut hundred in ODIs (Now I know you are the only Australian to do so), I remember the controversy involving you when you tweeted about you not getting selected in the next day’s test matches before the official team announcement. May be it was an immature move in today’s sporting world of professionalism and formality but it showed your discontent in not getting selected for your country.
Source: Twitter
I remember you from your last tour of India. You were particularly unstable and struggled a lot against the Indian spinners from the beginning. But you showed wonderful grit and application to finally produce couple of good, fighting innings for a team who were getting thrashed in the ground and also involved in  ‘homeworkgate’ off the fields.
All these were small memories Phill, may be ten-fifteen years down the line, I would have forget all those things but now that will not be the case. Since last Tuesday, you have become part of the Legends of this great game. You know Indians are now in Australia to play a test series, you could have been a part of that too. I was checking the scorecard of the Indian team’s practice match when I saw the news that you were hurt and taken to hospital in a very critical condition. I remembered a similar incident occurred to Nari Contractor, then Indian captain, during India’s tour of West Indies in 1962. Contractor survived, but had to left cricket at the age of 28. I thought similar fate was waiting for you and that made me sad. But little I knew I was ambitious. Yesterday, the worst possible thing happened and I was saddened beyond words.

Look Phill, I have not played cricket at any serious level. But still I think myself as a part of the cricketing fraternity of the world as a fan. I love to read about cricket, watch cricket matches of any era, between any teams and get in a cricket related discussion every day, may be at work or with my friends, my parents or my wife. And as a follower of this nobel game, I felt heartbroken for your demise.
Phill, I know I am just a cricketing muggle compared to cricketing wizards like you, who has represented their countries but I am five years older to you and it felt like a younger brother has passed away. You were so young, with so much boundless potential and opportunity to represent your country for next 10-12 years that it made everyone hurt. But still it makes me a little happy to think that you had left us while doing what you loved the most, playing cricket. I hope that there must be an Australian cricket team in heaven with Bradman and Tramper in the team. There you can resume your innings from 63 not out. As one of my friends has written in Facebook, you were retired, we are hurt.
Be well, my dear brother. Hope god takes care of you up there and once you become an angel please protect Sean Abbot, a young boy who is feeling the most terrible among all of us.
A follower of the game you loved
PS. Advance Happy Birthday Bro!

ISL - The New Dream

On last Sunday I became part of the history. I was part of the huge cheering crowd In Salt Lake stadium and observed ISL taking small steps which can turn into huge leap for Indian Football. I was there when artists from the eight cities including Anandan Shivamani played their various form of drums in a glamorous opening ceremony, I was there when (sadly) Priyanka Chopra spent more time talking about the owners (some of them her colleagues) than the football icons beside them, I was there when Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar sat side by side to watch a football match, the first match of the ISL, Indian Super League, between Atletico De Kolkata and Mumbai City FC.
I am not going into minor details like Kolkata won the match by a 3-0 scoreline or Fikru Teferra, Kolkata’s Ethiopian striker, became the first scorer in the history of ISL. But let’s look into the bigger picture.

India has a long history in football. Like many British colonies, in India also the football were started by the English people but Indians quickly caught on the game especially after Mohun Bagan’s victory in the 1911 IFA Shield final. Indian national team started their journey post independence and in first 15 years of independent India were quite a force in the Asian level. They won the gold in Aisan games of 1951 and 1962 and were fourth in 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
But post that period the performance started to drop, the other Asian teams through their hard work and more focused scientific approach leaped across when India fall behind and now with their FIFA ranking hovering around 150-160 India can only be called a ‘sleeping giant’ as referred by Sepp Blatter.

So what can ISL bring to this cricket crazy nation? The answer could be many folds. Obviously with proper publicity and marketing this can become hugely popular, creates new fan bases, spread the game to the remote parts of the country (like happened in cricket) and inspire a new generation to take up this game more seriously. But along with that this should also be hugely beneficial for the players.
Firstly it will give them a great chance to follow some of the most modern techniques and skills thanks the coaches coming from some of the mainstream footballing countries with vast experience. Playing with good foreign players and icon players, some of the biggest stars in world football in their own right, will not only inspire the Indian youngsters but will also provide the key insights about the game in general. The important factor would be the exposure which the Indian football will get through ISL. Some of the biggest corporate are part of this venture and with their business policy they will ensure that this tournament is well known and news about this is well spread out. Already foreign media from the countries like UK and Spain has shown significant interest in ISL. Team Kolkata’s partnership with Athletico Madrid is a great boon for the team as well as the league. Someone like Arsene Wenger is speaking about ISL in his press conference and hopes that this can bring new dawn for Indian football, this is wonderful.
The quality of football in ISL is definitely much better than the domestic I-league or the state level leagues. The teams are playing much fast paced and technically better football. And it looks great when the Indian players also doing pretty well with respect to speed and skill like their foreign team mates. Folkes like Arnab Mandal, Subhasish Roy Choudhury, Subhash Singh has already in focus with their performances. If they can utilize their learning from ISL in the international matches that will be hugely beneficial for the national team.
ISL also brought a more professional approach in the overall game. Hope some of these will be replicated in I-league too, like the foreign player selection for Indian clubs. ISL is clearly showing that the current group of foreign players like Dudu and Ranti are no match with the foreigners playing in ISL despite having a higher price tag on them and that raises the question about the player recruitment process of clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal and proves that the rumour about club officials hiring players based on the commission they are getting than the player’s skill may have some truth behind them.

But with all these great aspect are ISL perfect? If now then how could we improve ISL more and make it more meaningful for the world football scenario. May be I can share couple of ideas.
ISL clubs should get under FIFA registration and somehow get eligible to utilize the summer transfer window. If ISL continues to take place in September to December then these clubs can easily sign a few good quality young as well as aged players in half a season loans. Let them play for the clubs till December and then go back to their parent club in January. Obviously even the younger players are involved in reserve squad leagues and under-21 leagues but still we see many Premier league clubs loan out their players for the clubs in championship teams. Hoep ISL can also get involved there.
I absolutely love the way Kolkata franchise get in collaboration with Atletico Madrid. Delhi and Pune have also follow suit with their association with Feyenoord and Fiorentina. It is a win-win scenario for both the parties and I think all the remaining teams also should look to get in a relationship with any club from one of top football nations. Let me explain why I think it will be beneficial for the ISL clubs. If the ISL clubs have a partnership with one of those big clubs they can easily go and use their training facilities which are currently much better than what you get anywhere in India. They can also play practice matches with their players from their academy or reserve teams, get tips from coaching and physical training staffs and even learn from some of their first squad players.
Not only that, those clubs would definitely have a look into the performance of their ISL Counterparts (Atletico Madrid is already doing it) and if some young Indian player can attract them with his performance and technical skill they can be easily selected to be part of those clubs setup through reserve teams.

I also think at some point AIFF needs to find a way to combine I-league and ISL. Otherwise after this high quality football in ISL if we again go back to our slow, meaningless long ball based football in I-league that will not make any sense. Already I-league does not generate enough interest and now with the Indian fans watching top quality football in their own city may become more disinterested about I-league if the quality does not include. So somehow I think it is very important that there is a way we combine the traditional big clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Dempo and others get in some kind of partnership with the ISL clubs and embrace their professional approach.

I am very hopeful about ISL’s success and if I go by the quality of football and the support it got from the fans in the very first week of the league, this year’s ISL is already a success. Now if this can sustain for years to come and also bring the Indian football to significant spot in world football that needs to be seen. And with all the heroics from Virat Kohli, Saina Nehwal and Sushil Kumar I will also dream of a day when we can also cheer for someone like Subrata Pal saving a powerful long range drive from Sunil Chhetri in the final minutes of the El Clasico or Manchester Darby.

Yatrik: The Journey Within

It was a Saturday evening in South City, the shopping mall. And it was chaturthi, just before the Durga Puja. A huge number of people focussing on their last moment Puja shopping were strolling through various floors, moving in and out of different shops. But Shreya and I were not visiting Pantaloons or Shoppers Stop. We were in Starmark, the book store which also sells DVDs, gift items, folders, perfumes and even foreign chocolates. Just near the entrance there is a rack with all the latest books, a few books on politics, Mahabharata, sports. There were a few books from foreign authors. Also there were books from so-called new age Indian writers who wrote about sweet love and college hotties in their books intended for India’s youth.

We however were looking for a different book and despite searching through various sections of the store we started fearing that the book may not be yet released in Kolkata. Hence we asked one attendant in the shop and he after consulting with another couple of his colleagues finally handed me the book from one of the almost-hidden corners of the fiction section. They said that the book arrived just day before and I wondered how that could reach such a farthest corner in just a day! The book we were looking for was Yatrik, the third book written by Arnab Ray aka Greatbong. Well, I just wanted to write this to show like everything in life how in the publishing industry also it all depending on the marketing and publicity but not on the quality. Not good news for potential writers with no connections like me!!

Arnab has a long presence in the Indian blogger community. After spending a considerable time writing blogs on topics ranging from Lambu Ata (Who ultimately got his 'Maut ki Chnata' in the movie Gunda) to Twilight saga to his local sweet shop he ventured into writing books. Obviously his first book was different from his regular blog posts in the web but the themes were similar based on his style of humour and satire. He did not only get the attention but rather turned a few heads on the way.
His second book ‘The Mine’ can boast as the first Indian horror novel. A rather dark plot line with multiple twists to shock the reader, the mine is a wonderful psychological thriller which made me finished that book at one go. At that time I could not stop myself from writing a review for ‘The Mine’.

Yatrik is nothing like any of the first two books. Yes, it may come as similar to ‘The Mine’ but that may be because of the death being a common theme in both the books but the similarities just end there.
Yatrik means a traveller. And the book focuses on the journey of Anushtup, the main protagonist of this book, the journey of his life. Although the book started with a death in the first chapter but Yatrik eventually talks about the life.
Anushtup is a typical Bengali guy. Like any one of us he gets confused about life, makes glaring mistakes while judging someone, get disillusioned of politics once he knows all the dirty tricks of it and has a huge ego which make him leave his home and stay in a slum but stops him from taking unfair help from others, even if they are their closest relatives. And despite being the story of a regular Bengali guy, the book does not move in a straight, one-directional way. It moves with twist and turns. Old myths were broken; truth starts to lift his ugly head from the past, people changes, perception changes too.
Questions were answered, unanswered questions like ones which keep bugging us all through our life. Don’t all us have some questions in our life for which we never know the answers! Why everyone in my class did get 82 in life science in the board examination? Why that one close friend of mine stopped contacting me just without any reason? Why do I did not crack the interview I was so confident about? Yatrik tried to identify some of such answers and tried to break the myth about destiny. Ultimately every event in life has some explanation which may not be clear to us because it happened when we were not looking.
Despite being in US for quite a long time Arneb can still paint the city of Kolkata quite accurately with its various characters. There is a call centre boss, a shopping mall bunny, a political leader, a financial chit fund… small incidents which brings out the uniqueness of the city through Anushtup’s journey of life.
Yatrik is a beautiful read and I want to make just a couple of points for Arnab to keep in mind while writing his next (And I know he is busy in quite a few ongoing projects). I was not convinced with some part of the book near the end and think that plot could have been tighter but again Arnab being the storyteller can argue that he was convinced when he thought about that part of story and he thought that plot was the best for the overall story.
The second observation is regarding the dialogues. I think it is already mentioned in Abhishekda’s blog and I kind of agree with him. I feel Arnab gets confused about what should be the right mix of English for his Indian characters. It’s always easy if you are writing dialogues for an American or a British character as they are speaking English all the time and has a significantly different way of expressing themselves. Whereas for a Bengali character, who is a simplest of common man in his mid forties, it’s not always easy to picture in one’s mind regarding how he would speak in English without sounding too snobbish or sounding too cool.

At the end I would say, after ‘The Mine’, the expectation was very high from Arnab and to me he has delivered successfully with Yatrik, the story of one’s journey of life. Now the appetite has just increased and I am waiting eagerly for his next.

Alia is not Alone : Thankfully

This will be a relatively smaller post in my blog because my main idea is to collate a few videos which I like to watch over and over again. I am writing this post to celebrate the awesome gift of humour which only few people have. Also not all humour but a special kind of humour. The humour which is targeted to no one else the person who is making the joke. This is the power of laughing at himself.
Sadly, in recent time Indians especially politicians and fans of certain cricket players have become so egoistic that they can not stand any joke or even a single opposite view from anyone else. In this time it’s like a breath of fresh air when I find a video where someone is making fun of himself instead of taking pot shot at someone else.
I love to laugh at myself and my friends Kanad or Sayantan would support that fact. I remember some of my drunken stories as some of the most hilarious stories I know. And I have told those stories many a time despite the risk of embarrassing myself.
The idea of this piece has come to my mind after watching Alia Bhatt in the wonderful video created by AIB which includes people like Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra and Mahesh Bhatt alongside Alia. And they had a great time in that 10 minutes video and so do I. Alia was exceptional but I also loved those cameos from Arjun and Parineeti. With two and half million views in just two days this video is truly viral and deservingly so.

Few years back I have watched the following video. It was none other than Rajanikanth who took the centre stage. Not only it was a great narration by him but it also shows his humbleness and great sense of humour. I also understood why he was so very popular among his fans.

Anurag Kashyap generally comes out as a serious guy making serious movies. But the video he created with the folks of Qtiyapa shows his fun side. With movie ideas like ‘Jab We Kill’ and ‘Lingam’ it is an outrageously funny piece.

I can remember these three videos at this moment and I will keep adding as I find more. Before I close let me try to the same. I would like to end with a story of mine.

The year was 2007. I have just joined HSBC couple of months back. One of those days I and one of the senior members of the team were in the lift lobby for the elevator to come. Certain Middle aged gentleman joined us. He knew my team member and greeted him. My team member introduced me to him so we shook hands and then our conversation went like this:

Middle Aged Gentleman (smiling): Hi, Kandivelu!
Me: Sorry…
MAG: Kandivelu!!
Me: Sorry, I did not get you.
MAG: KANDIVELU!!!
Me (desperately): What’s that?

… A pause…

MAG: It’s my name!!!

The Lords’ Encore – 18 years down the line

Eighteen years back in the evening of 22nd June the whole India were treated to the welcome note sung by the two young Indian batsmen making their way into the grind of international test cricket. It was the second test of India’s tour of England and in an extremely messy scenario, perfectly exampled by the Indian team quite a few times during that era, those two young men were playing their first test match in the ‘Head-quarters’, the Lords.
India was already behind in the test series thanks largely to a very mediocre batting performance in both the innings of the Trent Bridge test match. Even a Sachin Tendulkar century was not enough for a team to save the test match for whom the next best score in that innings was 18. Clearly something has to give and it was obvious that Tendulkar needs some support in the other end to build his innings and also for India to make some sizable total.
To make matter worse, Navjot Singh Sidhu, one of the mainstay of the Indian batting line up walked out of the tour just before the second test due to an ugly spat with then Captain Mohammed Azharuddin. Already there were talks of giving chance to one of the newbie’s Sourav Ganguly to make his debut in Lords. Ganguly just played two ODIs before that with a gap of more than 4 years between them. But his 46 in the last One day was a good innings and he was generally in a good form during the tour with couple of centuries in the first class matches against the counties and other minor teams.
The other option in the middle order was Rahul Dravid. Despite being a prolific run scorer in domestic cricket Rahul was quickly gaining the dubious reputation of being a ‘domestic tiger’ much like Raman Lamba and some others due to the poor return in his first few ODIs. From his debut in April of that year till that test, Rahul played 5 ODIs scoring only 43 runs in those. But he also got a chance in that last ODI along with Sourav and made quick unbeaten 22 of 15 at the death. Hence when Sanjay Manjarekar was deemed injured before the second test then Rahul replaced him in the number 7 position in the batting line up.

India won the toss and put England in. England with a very strong top order with Atherton, Stewart, Hussain, Thorpe and Hick found an unlikely hero in their eccentric wicketkeeper Jack Russel, whose 124 along with support from Thorpe, who scored 89, took England to 344. For India, Venkatesh Prasad, playing his second test, put his name in the Lords Honour board with five wickets. Srinath got 3 and Ganguly with his slow medium pace utilized the condition and pitch to get enough swing to finish with two big scalps of Hussain and Hick.
At the end of second day’s play India was 83 for loss of two wickets with Ganguly and Tendulkar in the middle. India kept losing wickets in regular interval on the third day and at 202 for 5 was at the risk of getting allout below 300. Ganguly was solid in one side but needed support. Rahul Dravid came out of the dressing room and joined Sourav to bat in his first test match. Rest as they say is history. That day, their partnership of 94 runs was the first of many such partnerships in next 12 years. Ganguly got that elusive debut century at Lords to get out for 131. Dravid built important partnerships with his Karnataka team mates Kumble and Srinath but unfortunately got out just 5 short of his debut hundred.

That test match ended in a draw but the course of Indian cricket was changed that day. Those two youngsters with their talent and capability drive Indian cricket to many new peaks and accomplishment throughout their career.
Together they have scored almost 43,000 international runs to go with 137 wickets and almost 600 catches. I can keep listing their 100’s and 50’s but these dry statistics cannot completely illustrate their contribution to the Indian cricket. They are two ideal ‘Sportsman’ in true sense of the term and as leaders and as great performers they are well respected and loved by thousands of fans and critics all over the cricketing world and beyond.

Let’s move forward to 2014. India is playing another test match in Lords and the surroundings are very similar to that 96 tour. India has not won an away test match for over 2 years during which they have played 15 test matches outside home. People are asking questions about the team combinations and line up. To add to that, things got messier with India’s complaint against James Anderson and England’s counter-complaint against Ravindra Jadeja just before the start of the test matches. India again has a young batting line-up and although no one is making their debut but two of them have played less than 10 test matches. Among them Ajinkya Rahane played just 6 test matches and all though he already scored his maiden test century in New Zealand it’s safe to say that he is still finding his feat in the longer version of the game.
After the slow lifeless pitch in Trent Bridge during the first test, the Lords pitch was completely different. It is the most greenish pitch produced in Lords in ages and just before the test match the tweeter and other social media sites were buzzing with ex-cricketers and cricket followers exclaiming their surprise in such a green pitch.
(Source: Internet)
India lost the toss and was sent in by England. The pitch had lots of life in it and Indians had quite a difficult time throughout the first session. But after a relatively better first session where they scored 78 runs with loss of just 2 wickets India lost their way in the middle session and when they lost their 7th wicket with 145 on board even 200 looked like a distant dream. Rahane came to bat at the fall of 3rd wicket and by the time the 7th wicket fall he reached 26. Although he looked solid but there was a possibility that he could run out of partners.
But Bhuvneshwar Kumar was not ready to give in easily; he became just the right ally for Rahane playing very sensibly with a mindset and technique of a batsman. And as the pressure were off from his shoulder Rahane became more and more assured and with the second new balls coming to bat more quickly he started playing his shots which included a wonderful lofted six of Anderson, arguably England’s best bowler of the day. Although Kumar got out with Rahane at 78 he found more able support in Mohammed Shami and finally reached his first Lords’ century with punch through point boundary.
It is a memorable innings played in a difficult pitch with the team in dire straits. Rahane is slowly making his name in test cricket and getting the reputation of not only Top-class test batsman but also someone who has the traits to build long partnership with the tail, an enviable quality for any middle order batsman.

18 years back those two gentlemen made an entire generation of cricket followers falling in love with their brand of cricket. And although we do not know whether India will be able to snatch a win or not but we can just hope that Ajinkya Rahane will be able to create many such generations of fans with other great innings like this one.
